Data Science and IoT for Addressing Environmental Sanctity
PROBLEM STATEMENT
AWARENESS
We know surprisingly little about our surroundings.
SPATIAL
VARIATION
Ambient air quality can vary drastically between locations that are barely a few hundred meters apart.
LIFE EXPECTANCY

3 million people across the globe die due to outdoor air pollution, of which India’s burden is 1 million.
QUALITY OF
LIFE
Respiratory issues can be acquired and impact the wellbeing of individuals.
EXPENSIVE
Existing air quality monitoring networks are sporadic and prohibitively expensive to expand.
COMPONENTS OF PROPOSED SOLUTION
Big Data and Data Science
Satellite Remote Sensing
Agent based models
IoT | Sensor Network
SCHEMATIC OF SOLUTION
CASE STUDY – A LOCALITY IN CHENNAI
• A pilot study was run in a specific locality in Chennai with one mobile device fitted on a van.

• The route was chosen such that the vehicle would travel roughly 30 kilometers in each trip covering an effective area of roughly 15 sq. km (5 x 3 km).

• Multiple land use profiles were covered

• Data collected over 30 days of study was condensed into a 24-hour frame for analysis.
Heat maps depicting spatio-temporal variation across a single day are available with the presenter. On account of the content being under review, it is not shared in this presentation. Please reach out for further discussion.
CASE STUDY 1
•Short lived extreme event analysis
•Area 1: Commercial area + middle-class and lower middle-class residential areas.
•
•Area 2: Industrial area with multiple small workshops, Middle-class and lower middle-class residential areas.
•Diwali
•Area 3: Upper-class residential area
•Area 4: Institutional area.
